The split that matters most for publishers is search-anchored versus assistant-first. AI Overviews and AI Mode sit on top of Google's search index and inherit its crawl — Google documents their eligibility as ordinary indexing plus snippet eligibility. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, and Gemini are assistant-first, reaching the web at answer time through their own documented crawlers and fetchers.
The differences matter operationally because each platform's crawling, retrieval, and citation behavior is documented — and blockable — separately. What do answer engines do to clicks?
They reduce them — the best public measurement is Pew Research's July 2025 study of real Google browsing behavior. On visits where an AI summary appeared, users clicked a traditional result link 8% of the time, versus 15% on visits without a summary. Clicks on the sources cited inside a summary were rarer still: roughly 1% of summary views. The answer, for most searchers, is the destination.
That is the mechanism behind zero-click search, and it reframes what winning means: presence inside the answer becomes a real but hard-to-measure asset, while the click volume that presence returns is small. Worth saying against our own interest: for many publishers, chasing answer-engine presence is worth less than the excitement suggests — the honest move is to price the 1% click reality into any plan before spending on it.
The record does hold a real counterpoint, and reconciling the two is more useful than picking one. Seer Interactive's CTR data (2025) found organic click-through falling 61–70% when an AI Overview appears — but sites cited inside the Overview earning roughly 35% higher CTR than uncited peers. Both findings fit together: the click pool shrinks for everyone, and citation claims a larger share of the smaller pool. Being quoted is worth something; it is just worth less than a ranking used to be.
Why does the category matter for publishers?
Because the unit of competition is now the passage. An answer engine quotes chunks — self-contained, extractable passages that answer a question directly — so a page that ranks but resists extraction can lose the answer to a page that never outranked it.
